“A inteligência artificial (IA) procura preparar os computadores para fazer o tipo de coisas que a mente é capaz de fazer. Algumas dessas coisas (como o raciocínio) são definidas normalmente como ‘inteligentes’, escreve Boden. “Outras (a visão, por exemplo), não. Mas todas envolvem habilidades psicológicas – percepção, associação, previsão, planejamento, controle motor – que permitem que os seres humanos e os animais alcancem seus objetivos. A inteligência não é uma dimensão única, mas um espaço ricamente estruturado com diferentes habilidades de processar informação. Consequentemente, a IA utiliza muitas técnicas diferentes.”
Ao longo de sete capítulos ricos e profundos, Boden explora essas técnicas e tarefas da inteligência artificial, desde seus primórdios até os próximos passos que daremos: do que representam linguagem, criatividade e emoção, passando por redes neurais artificiais, robôs, vida artificial e, até mesmo, a singularidade dos seres humanos.
“A IA permitiu, em especial, que psicólogos e neurocientistas desenvolvessem teorias convincentes a respeito da mente-cérebro. Entre elas estão os modelos de como o cérebro físico trabalha, e – uma questão diferente, mas igualmente importante – o que exatamente o cérebro faz: a que perguntas computacionais (psicológicas) ele responde e que tipo de processamento de informação permite que ele faça o que faz”, pontua. Muitas perguntas continuam sem resposta, pois a própria IA ensina que a mente humana é muito mais rica do que os psicólogos tinham imaginado anteriormente.
Sobre a autora - Margaret A. Boden é Full Professor em Ciências Cognitivas na Universidade de Sussex e uma das figuras mais conhecidas no campo da Inteligência Artificial. Ela escreveu extensivamente sobre o assunto, com destaque para a obra Mind as Machine: A History of Cognitive Science (2006). É membro da Academia Britânica e da Academia Europeia. Em 2001, foi condecorada com a Ordem do Império Britânico por suas contribuições à ciência cognitiva.
